E Pluribus Unum
A very good column from one of my favorite local columnists. About hypocrisy* and fear in media ad choices.
(*a spelling update: Hypocrisy is the only word I know of that I consistently misspell. Ever since childhood. So I belately apologize for the former spelling of that word on this post: hipocracy. For a writer, spelling that word wrong is just, well, hypocritical?)
(groan. yes.)

Great article.
Scary stuff. Reminds me of the fact that caskets were not allowed to be photographed as they came back from Iraq.

"...it was the network's long-standing policy to reject any "advocacy advertisements".
what?! *sigh* this made me really sad.
and really weird too, right? I wondered why they considered this necessarily an "advocacy advertisement." I heard their justifications--bush's proposal, blah blah--but it just seems a welcoming message, not preachy, or "advocating."
i think there is a tremendous amount of leeway given to the right to make decisions in the media now. there is a lot of fear of regulation and repercussions (money). and this is just one example. the coffins thing is definitely bad. their justification for not photographing them is that it will hurt families. yes, but no. my understanding is that the honors bestowed on the coffins make it a venerable sight, a treatment that families like to see has been given to their loved ones.
it's just control. it's control however you spin it. We control You, they tell us in the media in no uncertain terms. but i'm of the mind that the pendulum swings back. in the meantime, we just keep fighting back. okay, those of us who are not the big 3 networks, or the WSJ editorial page, or or or...
we'll do some fighting.
